Back in the day jungle music was hailed as a genre with an uncanny power to bring people together, whatever their age, race or gender. Since it broke into the clubs in London in the mid-90s, the music has matured and diversified into drum’n'bass, UK garage, breakbeat and dubstep – always providing something grittier and more energetic than typical 4/4 house tracks. The Upbeatz party, which takes place every Thursday night in Plataforma club, was created to channel the positive vibes of the genre and provide Barcelona with its only weekly quality drum and bass night. As well as inviting international greats to the decks, Upbeatz runs regular competitions to encourage and promote local DJing talent and help the growth of the d’n'b scene. So if you’re tired of the attitude of Barcelona’s posh house clubs then bring your dancing sneakers to this weekly mash up of friendly peeps and jaw-rattling beats. The fun kicks off at midnight and runs ’til 5.30am. Best of all you can enter for free before 1am, or after for 7 euros (with a free drink included).

The Sutton Club is undoubtedly one of the most exclusive addresses in town and if partying with Barcelona’s glitterati is what you’re all about then get yourself on the guestlist. Anytime after 2am and lines of long-legged beauties and Spanish playboys shuffle nervously towards the entrance in the hope of sliding past the no-nonsense security. Once inside a palace of cream-coloured couches, lowlit VIP areas and of course spacious dancefloor provide an arena for the city’s elite to drink the bar dry and shake their sexy thing to house music laced with R’n'B. Get dressed up and go.

Sequestered in one of the Gothic Quarter’s typically dark and narrow alleys, Sugar Bar has the vibe of a hip hard-to-find drinking den, even though it’s no more than 20 seconds away from Placa Reial! A mix of tourists, ex-pats and locals cram into the tiny red interior on a nightly basis, either squishing together in a booth (such as the crimson-cushioned one in the window), or perching on bar stools, whilst the friendly bar staff dish out mojitos that don’t cost a mint. Good tune selections, happy hour until 11pm (or all night on Tuesdays!) and great mingling opportunities make Sugar a sweet spot for starting the night.

Somewhere on a narrow alley in the Old Jewish Quarter of the Barri Gotic is a welcoming enclave of the first order, designed to nourish and refresh both in-the-know locals and Barcelona newbies lucky enough to stumble upon it (hint check the map icon above to improve your chances!). From the affordable global cuisine, consisting of everything from Tabbouleh (Lebanese salad) to Pad Thai, to the sexy tune selection, reliable WiFi connection and free tapas between 5-7pm, Stoke Bar has no shortage of hooks to reel you in with. And quite apart from these constants, Stoke also weaves a varied web of week-round entertainment, including cult movie nights (Mondays), cocktail-making classes (Thursdays) and salsa classes with sangria (Sundays). All the action takes place in a tactfully-restored tenement house where modern art mingles with marble staircases and Modernista flourishes. Check out the original one-piece floral floor tile on the first floor and wonder how the hell they hewed that one.

With a name like Sports Bar Rambles, even David Beckham could hazard a guess at what happens inside this modern venue on the bottom of Las Ramblas. It’s all about the blood, sweat and tears of your favourite sportsmen and women and with 16 high definition widescreen TVs and one giant HD screen, visible across the whole bar, you’re guaranteed a great view of the action – be it La Liga, the Premiership, World Cup, Superbowl, Six Nations or any other sport you can think of. Great food, including hamburgers, tasty club sandwiches, pizzas and Tex-Mex, and special deals on beer ensure that the atmosphere is always bubbling in Sports Bar, whilst football jerseys, antique golf clubs and action photos hanging from the walls all contribute to the vibe. In between games you can shoot pool, play darts or challenge your amigos to a game of fussball, whilst the friendly English-speaking staff pour you another pint. If you’re fed up of the cool but ever-so-small drinking dens of the Gothic Quarter, and want to drink in a place with some elbow room for a change, then you might want to drop by the Sonora Sport Tavern for a cerveza or two. East of centre, in the oft-deserted district of Poblenou, Sonora is a beer hall style pub with a wooden interior packed full of tables and benches and decorated with wholesome bits of Americana, such as Jim Beam plates and ice hockey posters. Naturally it’s not called the Sonora Sport Tavern for nothing and the bar boasts two giant screens for showing the big match, or, if nothing’s kicking, for playing MTV classics instead. The mood can get pretty ripe and raucous, especially on Wednesday nights when Erasmus students head down and the beer flows non-stop, courtesy of the world’s fastest pouring bar staff. If Estrella doesn’t rock your world Sonora also serves up Murphys and Newcastle Brown Ale to name but a few.

Once the favoured hang out for dancers at the legendary El Molino theatre, Rouge was shut down when high society got a little too high for the authorities’ liking. Now Rouge has re-opened and, if some of the naughtier goings-on no longer take place, the venue’s seemingly irrepressibly louche and Bohemian atmosphere still prevails. The red lighting, shabby sofas, cherub-bedecked gold bar and kitsch art work (oil paintings of semi-naked lobster-sellers and badly-forged Van Eycks) all contribute to a chaotic and intimate setting, perfect for knocking back a cocktail or five. The crowd is older and more sophisticated than some of Barcelona’s more touristy bars, the eclectic downtempo tunes a cut above the usual chart nonsense, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a poetry performance or other artistic event. Open Wednesday to Sunday, Rouge also has WiFi if you need to log on with a lager earlier in the evening.

Your friends will be pleased if you lead them to this rather hip watering hole, hidden – as with most of the best bars in Barcelona – down a dark and desolate looking alley. The name Polaroid hints at the 80s theme, explored in full by the bar’s superbly kitsch tribute decor. VHS tapes are glued to the wall, along with posters of all your favourite movies from Flashdance to Top Gun, and suspended above the toilets is a small bike before a huge moon, its basket loaded with none other E.T. himself. With canas at one euro and a good-looking mix of locals and foreigners no wonder breathing space is at a premium. Still the cool factor makes Polaroid worth the crush.

Although most tourists will miss this hidden bar, staged in an inconspicuous third floor flat, amongst resident at least Pipa Club is Barcelona’s worst-kept secret. Thanks to its very late license this shabby Sherlock Holmes-themed drinking den is regularly packed to the rafters with thirsty folk who have been kicked out of bars around the city. Keep your eyes out for the train of youngsters making their way across Plaza Real to Pipa at exactly 3am on a nightly basis (the closing time for virtually all other bars in Barcelona). Ring the bell, ascend the stairs, try not to fall over right in front of the doorman, and you too will be admitted into this coven of late-night revelry… and, although there’s no dancefloor to strut your stuff, plenty of friendly drunks and a pool table make Pipa an essential nocturnal adventure. Unsurprisingly given the name, the club is smoky as hell.
